Powerful Stories through the Power of Place

How can ArcGIS StoryMaps be used to effectively disseminate information and increase engagement and transparency? What stories could be shared to support initiatives that are vital to the health of our city’s population, economics and environment?

Project Description: The preponderance of municipal data is place based and the City’s stories are so often defined by geography. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) combine the what and the where to build a geocentric understanding our city. ArcGIS StoryMaps combine maps, data, images, text and visualizations to share stories in a way that is accessible, engaging, and interactive. How can the City of Hamilton (Planning and Economic Development) integrate StoryMaps into its communication and engagement strategy?

This project entails research to identify ways in which a StoryMap application could be used by the City of Hamilton to share information, collect feedback, and engage stakeholders. To accomplish this, the team will need to:

  • Compile examples of how other municipalities are utilizing ArcGIS StoryMaps

  • Gather or develop resources for StoryMap creation to understand tool capabilities.

  • Identify potential City of Hamilton themes to, for instance:

    • Entice investment in Hamilton.

    • Help residents access services related to housing.

    • Share development projects.

    • Promote City climate initiatives (programs, solar potential)

    • Highlight tourist sites and events.

  • Develop and document the creation of one or more prototype/pilot exemplar StoryMap(s)

  • Present and demonstrate the product to broader internal audience.
