What business does Hamilton have with Open Data?

Municipalities are putting a lot of emphasis on Open Data.  Why?  How does the City compare to other municipalities?

Project Description: In Development Planning we collect an incredible amount of data from our development applications and approvals that are granted by the City. Some of this data is collected and tracked by the Province.  We hear from the public and development community that they would like more open data available to them and it would be helpful to better understand the value of the information and how best to provide it.

What is the big deal with Open Data?  How might we refresh our available Open Data to the public and what does it look like?

Through this project, we hope to achieve and answer:

  • Assessment of our current state

  • Municipal scan (reviewing practices of other municipalities regarding Open Data).  Does not have to be only Ontario and can even be outside Canada.

  • How to we compare to other municipalities?

  • Is there any risk to the municipality when sharing the information?

  • Who is the target audience and who benefits?

  • Report on best practices

  • Provide guidance on improvements the City of Hamilton can take in order to promote and better the quality of the Open Data Datasets
