Sustainable Mobility: Cycling Infrastructure

How can we improve community engagement and encourage feedback from the community on cycling infrastructure projects?

Project Description: The City of Hamilton’s Sustainable Mobility Department has worked on several bike lane projects since its inception in 2009. In conjunction with planning the infrastructure, the department engages with its stakeholders through the various channels to ensure they are given the opportunity to voice their concerns and provide feedback. However, some stakeholders feel unsatisfied with the current levels of existing engagement. Their current objective is to increase the various forms of community engagement to better inform the public on existing/future cycling infrastructure projects.

Challenge Summary: We’ve identified a need for a flexible yet standardized approach for public engagement on bike lane projects of various scales. This approach is classing infrastructure according to the effects it has on the community and travelers, and outlining a suitable level of engagement for each class of infrastructure.
