How can we build neighbourhood resilience to extreme weather caused by climate change?
Final Project Report: Climate Ready Hamilton
Project Description: Climate change is the single biggest threat that municipalities across the world will face. Extreme weather events caused by climate change is already happening in Hamilton causing massive infrastructure, social and environmental costs. Although a global problem, climate change can impact neighbourhoods very differently depending on how the neighbourhood is physically connected, the social services and social capital already provided within that neighbourhood and other assets that are within that community that help to improve their resiliency to climate change.
The project we are working on in partnership and led by Environment Hamilton and Community Resiliency to Extreme Weather (CREW) is looking to build and improve neighbourhood resiliency to climate change through the building of resilience hubs, utilization of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and storytelling. We are looking to assess the current physical, social and environmental structures in place at a neighbourhood level, properly map these assets through ArcGIS story map and put together a neighbourhood action plan tailored to that specific neighbourhood to improve climate resiliency.
We are looking for a group(s) of students to take on a specific neighbourhood that will be our boots on the ground, conducting audits, surveys, questionnaires and research in order build the comprehensive ArcGIS story map and create the neighbourhood action plan.
